Our 4-Point Verification — What It Actually Means When You See "Verified" on a Profile

The word "verified" has been so overused it's nearly meaningless. Here's what it specifically means on HomeSorted — and what we refuse to compromise on.

The verification trust gap

Walk through any home-services platform and you'll see green "verified" ticks everywhere. Click into them and you'll find that "verified" usually means "uploaded a profile picture" or "confirmed an email address". For a client letting a stranger into their home, that's worse than useless — it's misleading.

HomeSorted's verified label means exactly four things. Every single time. No exceptions.

Check 1 — Certified ID document

Every provider uploads a clear scan or photo of their South African ID (book or smart card). We do not accept driver's licences or passports for primary identity verification — the SA ID document is the legal anchor.

Our admin reviews the document for:

  • Authenticity (we've trained on the most common SA ID forgery patterns)
  • Matching name to bank details and tax records
  • Match to the live selfie (see check 4)

Failure rate at this stage: about 6% of applicants. Most are honest people who uploaded a blurry image; a small fraction are fraudsters who walk away when they realise we're paying attention.

Check 2 — Bank confirmation letter

This is *the* hardest check to fake. Providers must request an official letter from their bank, on bank letterhead, confirming the account holder's name matches the ID and that the account is active.

Why this matters: it's how we pay them out. Every Friday, Stitch sweeps verified provider payments via automated EFT. No bank letter → no payout pipeline → no profile on the platform.

Side effect: it's an extraordinarily good fraud filter. Identity thieves don't go to a bank branch.

Check 3 — Police clearance certificate

Issued by SAPS. Confirms the applicant has no current criminal record. We accept a clearance up to 6 months old at submission, and we re-verify annually.

This isn't about excluding anyone who has ever made a mistake — South African criminal records expire after a set period under the Criminal Procedure Act. It's about confirming there's no active, serious, recent issue.

Failure rate: about 3% of applicants. Either declined silently, or returned for resubmission after the applicant clears the underlying issue.

Check 4 — Live in-app selfie (refreshed every 24 hours)

This is the check that makes the other three impossible to game.

A provider on HomeSorted can't be a different person from the verified ID, because every time they go active on the platform we take a *live, in-app* selfie (no gallery uploads allowed) and match it to the ID photo using facial similarity.

The refresh window is 24 hours. If you haven't selfied in 24 hours, you can't accept jobs. If your selfie doesn't match the ID? Account locked, admin reviews.

This single mechanism eliminates the "uncle works in a different town and lets his nephew use his login" pattern that plagues other platforms.

Why we don't outsource verification

Three competitors I won't name use third-party "background check" providers. We don't, because:

  • Those services pull a credit-bureau record. That tells you about debt, not about whether the person at the door is who they say they are.
  • They have no live-presence component. Your verified plumber could be in Cape Town while the person ringing your doorbell in Johannesburg is anyone.
  • They charge per check, and to keep margins workable, competitors run them once and never again.

We do it ourselves, we re-verify documents annually, and we refresh the live selfie every day. The 15% platform fee covers the cost.

What you can do with this information

When you compare profiles on /browse, look at the verification panel: ID, Bank, Police, Selfie — each with a date stamp. The Selfie timestamp will say something like "Refreshed 4h ago". That's a real person, alive and active, today.

If you ever see a provider on a competing platform with a vague "verified" badge and no clear date stamps, ask the platform what specifically was verified. You'll get evasive answers. That's the gap we built HomeSorted to close.
